Parent Information - Show Choir Competitions 101
- Parents, friends, family, etc. are highly encouraged to attend competitions. The kids appreciate the support. Wear your competition shirt, Silver Connection swag, or MG spirit wear!
- It is fun to watch other choirs, but it is not necessary. Plan your arrival time wisely and allow plenty of time to find parking and navigate the school. Entrance to the performance area is not allowed once a show has started, so you need to enter between performance groups
- You must pay admission to watch the performances. Admission is about $10-15pp for half day and $15-20pp for entire day (includes finals) for a wristband. You can enter a school without paying admission, but you will not be allowed inside the performance area without the wristband. More schools allow credit card payments, but not all. Bring cash!
- The first 2-4 rows in front of the stage are reserved for families of the performing choir. You can sit in those rows only when MG is performing. There is usually about 10-15 minutes between choirs so there is time to move to the front.
- Cheering, clapping , whistling, hooting, and/or hollering during dance breaks and after performances are expected!
- Show your “silent applause” after ballads by raising your hands and wiggling your fingers. Standing ovations at the end of performances are the norm.
- The kids will be getting dressed, in warmups, and in queue starting 60 minutes before their showtime. They go to critique immediately after their show. It can be challenging to meet up with your child.
- The competitions are big events that also double as fundraisers for the hosting schools and choir booster clubs. The money paid for entry fees, concessions, program sales, swag, etc., help pay for the professional stage and audio setup and help support the hosting schools’ choir programs. The event workers are all parent volunteers.
- A great resource for information about competitions, timing, lineup, winners, etc. for all competitions is www.showchoir.com (linked above too)
- Show Choir competitions are full of energy, music, hair flips, sparkly costumes, a bit of drama, and lots of love! They are a place for our music-minded kids to be with their people and shine!
